Lithuanian Veterinarian Contributes to the Birth of a Cloned Whippet Puppy
A Lithuanian veterinarian, Dr. Jakovas Šengaut, played a key role in the cloning process of a whippet puppy. His involvement began with a procedure crucial for the eventual success of the cloning. The story unfolded when a dog owner from Kaliningrad decided to clone their beloved pet.
Whippet Cloning Costs Reached €100,000
“I was approached by wealthy clients from Russia, one of whom had a dog treated in our clinic for kidney failure. The dog, an elderly whippet, was in very poor condition and had to be euthanized. At the owner’s request, I took a tissue sample from the abdominal cavity during the euthanasia procedure. The sample was then sent to South Korea, where the cloning was successfully completed. I know the process cost more than $100,000,” shared Dr. Jakovas Šengaut.
Cloning Costs Have Dropped, But Success Rates Remain Low
When this procedure was performed in 2016, cloning a pet was an expensive and exclusive service. Today, cloning costs have significantly decreased, with some clinics offering it for half the price. Despite the cost reduction, Dr. Šengaut notes that the success rate of cloning remains low, at only 10-15%.
A Skeptical Stance on Cloning
While Dr. Šengaut fulfilled his client’s request, he remains skeptical about the practice of cloning pets:
“I have serious doubts whether the cloned animal will have the same personality, as that’s often the main goal of cloning. Additionally, there is evidence suggesting that cloned animals may not exhibit optimal health,” explained Dr. Šengaut.
